Hi all.

I'm thinking from a while about an OpenJ web radio... but some questions in my mind.

Streaming a web radio with only opensource music (licensed as Creative Common for example) require licenses and fees?

Bandwidth?

Space?

The Creative Common and similar require fees to authors or any?

Someone could help me????

If you're playing just Creative-Commons licenced music and obeying those licences correctly there should be no fees to pay.

Of course, the RIAA may try to get their sticky-mits involved but life is nothing without risks and the RIAA haven't a leg to stand on

As for streaming; if you want to do direct streaming with both live and pre-recorded material, Icecast is your best bet.

As for the server platform, you'll need a dedicated server and *plenty* if not unlimited bandwidth.

Even at the best possible bitrate/quality trade-off (Ogg/Vorbis @ ~45kbps) you'll suck up bandwidth quite quickly.

I'm looking at setting something up as a web-radio service provider soon. I'd be more than happy to help you out

I'm thinking (from some time) to mix up some tracks from the Agnula Muzik project (http://muzik.agnula.org/) and stream them at fixed data. Just some nice performance (offline). I hope also to find some feedback, partecipation and maybe join.

I live in Italy and there we have SIAE (the same as RIAA but maybe worse). The SIAE rules are very obscure: I contacted directly the Agnula project to have some more help. Their secret is having servers in Sweden, where copyright rules are better build.
I'm waiting for some more discussion.

Well... I was looking for a stream server for such a project. If you can provide me one , it would be really fine! (the problem is that I'm not a commercial company and I can't pay for that service. I'm already paying for the whole OpenJay.org space and bandwidth, which is everyday growing.... So I understand if you can't help me and give it as a gift!!!)

Think however that it would be a limited time performance (maybe more than once but however limited to one/two hours...)

What about? I accept ideas and suggestions. I accept Djs joiners too...

A live performance would be really cool too.

At the moment I'm looking at renting a dedicated server to run icecast (top quality ogg vorbis). I'm in the UK but the server would be located in France (where bandwidth is cheaper)

I'd like to offer streaming services in Europe but obviously I need experience in setting up and operating such a system which is where it would be good to have someone like yourself providing a stream which can be used to also test the server.

Of course, in testing you could run the stream from my server for free.

I have also looked into the possibility of 'distributed DJing' where the server can accept streams from different (geographically seperated) DJs during the day.

Of course, it would be essential to ensure that the music played is correctly licenced (ie: Creative Commons Share-Alike etc)

That's a really interesting thing... We could maybe think something as 'distributed DJing' involving the OpenJ community for an event... Ok Ok... We'll see that.

Talking about the music: the whole stuff distributed by Agnula Muzik servers is licensed under:

Creative Commons Attribution-Share-Alike 1.0 License
Creative Commons Attribution 1.0 License
EFF Open Audio License 1.0.1

That's enough to allow streaming with that stuff.

Not sure if you're into dance music but http://www.dance-industries.com has a *huge* selection of dance tunes under the Creative Commons by-nc-nd deed.

There are a couple of tunes in there that have obviously 'uncleared' samples so they need good 'vetting' but the library is huge!
